The best applebees pies in America can be made in a variety of ways, but one of the easiest and most satisfying is to simply eat the applebees whole.
And that’s the recipe I share today.
But wait, there’s more.
In this post, I will show you how to make your own applebees pie, too.
And you can try all the different pie shapes, too!
I will also show you my personal favorite applebee pie recipe, and I’ll even share the secrets to making the perfect applebee crust, which is essential for a rich and delicious pie.
Let’s get started.
Ingredients 4 ounces (1/2 cup) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting pastry dough Ingredients 1/2 teaspoon salt Directions Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and line it with foil or wax paper.
(I use parchment paper for this.)
Mix together all the dry ingredients, including allspice and cinnamon.
Stir until smooth.
Spread flour mixture into prepared baking sheet.
Sprinkle with salt.
Bake at 350°F (180°C) for 12 to 14 minutes, until golden brown.
(You can also bake for a shorter time if the dough is still firm and crumbly.)
Let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before removing from the pan.
If you bake the pie in the oven, do not turn the oven on.
Allow to cool on a wire rack for about 15 minutes.
Cool completely before cutting into pies.
(See the recipe for more details.)
To make the applebee pastry dough: Combine all of the dry and wet ingredients in a bowl and mix well.
(The dough will be quite sticky.)
Place dough into a large mixing bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel and set aside.
(Alternatively, you can place the dough in a large bowl with room to spare.)
Add 1 teaspoon of the salt, 1/4 cup of the water, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and the flour mixture to the bowl.
(To help it stay together, you may need to mix with a rubber spatula.)
Using a rolling pin or fork, roll the dough into an 8-inch (20-cm) rectangle.
Fold the dough over itself and then over the water.
(It’s ok if you don’t do all the folds, as long as you’re not over the edge.)
(Note: I don’t recommend rolling a rectangle this large, as it will be very difficult to cut a hole in the pastry.)
Transfer the pie dough to a greased or silicone baking sheet and cut into 8 equal pieces.
(If you’re using foil, bake for about 10 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit (180 degrees Celsius).)
Place one pie piece at the bottom and another on top.
Place another pie piece on top of the first pie piece.
Repeat until all of your applebees are pie.
(Do not overlap pie pieces.)
Top each pie piece with a third piece.
Cover and chill at least one hour.
Remove from the refrigerator and serve.
To make crust: Preheat oven to 350° (180 °C) and line a pie plate with parchment.
(My pan comes with parchment, but you can use parchment, wax paper, or any other baking paper that fits.)
Sprinkle baking parchment with a bit of salt and allow to sit for about 20 minutes.
(Or, if you use wax paper and don’t want to mess with the parchment, cover it with aluminum foil.
Bake the pie for 8 to 10 minutes, or until golden.
(Some people prefer to bake at 350 for 10 minutes.)
Remove from oven and let cool completely before slicing.
To serve: Pour the crust into the prepared pie dish and top with a few slices of apple.
(Note that some people like to make a couple extra slices to top each pie with.)
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of apple syrup.
